The City and Province of Iloilo are in a state of calamity. We've been Katrina-ed, caught off guard by the wrath of Typhoon Frank. For the last 24 hours, Panay island has been besieged by 195 kph winds and deluged by 12-foot flash floods. There are entire families (including 101 year old lolas) on rooftops waiting to be rescued for almost a day now. There are stories of tragedy on the radio, like the father who tied his kid to a tree but couldn't save his wife who was swept away by the waters. Or the 7-month old baby who was also swept away. Or the rescuer who went about saving lives even as his own family was trapped by flood too. There were many people who were willing to help but they just did not have the equipment. Most areas don't have electricity yet. In Villa, where damage was minimal, we got energized a few hours ago.
This is the worst-ever natural calamity to have hit the Ilonggos.
Today at first daylight, the radio reporters said there were dead people caught on trees and a newly-married couple trapped in heavy silt. The estimated damage to infrastructure is P500 million. Many bridges have crumbled to pieces. The horror continues. I have heard radio announcers shift from using "rescue" to "retrieval".
When my dad and I visited the JASAC office in Pius before noon to deliver our contribution, the office was completely empty, save for a manang and manong who were bravely washing away the silt. I asked for Manang Helen and Manang Anne. They are Msgr. Oso's workhorses in the Social Action Center. They were not around. They were also trapped in flood in the Gawad Kalinga Village in Bito-on. Only Manong Ben was there, attending to the donations and some evacuees. Msgr. Oso had left to buy sardines. Msgr. Oso came just as I was about to leave. He said the madres were the ones in charge of cooking over at the Cathedral.
My dad and I passed by the Cathedral. There were many evacuees already milling around the Isabelita.
